Cartoon geeks and super hero lovers rejoice! The new Captain America: The Winter Soldier film is out on April 4th and it’s damn good.

I got to sit down with the guapísimo Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan, who far from his cold, dark portrayal of the Winter Soldier, is a charismatic, fun dude who loves the ’80’s and listening to music.

Pili Montilla: Captain America was written in 1941. What do you think still makes it relevant after more than 70 years?
Sebastian Stan: Captain America started out very specific, very patriotic.  But as the years went by it got more serious and complex. This idea of espionage, you know? So what happens when you have this guy that is morally really good? Is there such a thing as a perfect human being? Can a human be “non corruptible”? And I feel like that’s the essence of this guy (Captain America).

It’s a human struggle that I think is very interesting. (Captain America is) much more interesting that the other super heroes! And he’s relevant because we sometimes don’t really know the truth of what’s happening in our world.

PM: You’re character ‘Bucky’ plays an important role in both the first movie “Captain America: The First Avenger” as well as this one. But he’s gone through such a dramatic change! Did you feel like you were playing two different characters in two different movies?
SS:
Yes to some extent, and then no because I was still playing the same character, so there has to be some similarities. But there were a lot of new things.

PM: What were the biggest challenges for you as an actor in playing the same character, but with so many changes?
SS: It was much more physical. I didn’t have a lot of dialogue, I had this great costume. A lot of stillness too, and I looked a different way. The first movie was much more dialogue based and the physical stuff was very difficult, very hard and the character needed to have a certain kind of presence.

PM: Was it hard to contain yourself from speaking in some of the scenes then?
SS: No! I kind of liked it. Sometimes I hate dialogue. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in situations where I’m like ‘Do I really have to say this? Do people actually talk like this? You know they don’t!’ So coming to a situation where I don’t have to worry about that was kind of refreshing.

PM: Your costume was simple, but very intimidating and cool. Did you have any rituals while putting on the costume, that helped you get into character?
SS: Oh yeah! Oh man yeah! It was kind of a ritual. I listened to a lot of music while on set. A lot of instrumental music. And also the brothers (directors Anthony and Joe Russo) played a lot of music on set. They had their phones by the monitor and actually we were listening to the same music. So it was cool to have that connection. I played a lot of sound tracks from different movies. Also Daft Punk was huge for me and David Bowie and The Terminator soundtrack, believe it or not.

I love music. You know, I’ve always wanted to do an ’80’s movie! I love that music!

PM: You originally auditioned for the role of Captain America. Are you kind of glad you were chosen as Bucky instead? I mean, you kind of get to play two characters in one movie! That’s an actors dream!
SS: Yeah! I’m really glad. I wouldn’t change anything really. It all happened in a very specific way, plus I think Chris (Evans) is great as Captain America and I feel like I am better suited for this role. That’s just the truth. I’m totally happy with the way it worked out.

So are we! Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a great, solid, movie that balances action with a bit of comedy. It also stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford and Samuel L Jackson.
