‘Let’s Be Cops’ From Playing Dress Up to Real Trouble

by Jessica G. Ferrer | August 14, 2014

LET'S BE COPS

From fake cops to real trouble, long time buddies Justin Miller (Damon Wayans, Jr.) and Ryan O’Malley (Jake Johnson) go on the experience of a lifetime. They pretend to be cops for as long as they can get away with it. After having a little fun, the two come across some real trouble that only actual cops are equipped to handle. Directed and produced by Luke Greenfield and co-written with Executive Producer Nicholas Thomas, Let’s Be Cops is an entertaining load of funny and trouble combined.

Jakes Johnson tells us, “It was cool to do. And the director to his credit, really liked these like cool shots… That’s not something, you know I get to do a lot or Damon gets to do. So doing that was actually kind of fun. And it’s really fun seeing it and watching people getting into like the movie… and the fantasy element for these character also felt like it in my life.”

Justin Miller works at a videogame company and Ryan O’Malley bounces from job to job, although he did appear in a commercial. They go from being broke and having no self-worth to being street heroes. While they are way over their heads, their intentions are quite “harmless”, but impersonating a cop has its consequences. It’s then when the pair falls into the hands of local mobsters and bad cops. Luckily for these two, they’ve got Officer Segars played by the talented Rob Riggle. He’s no stranger to playing a man in uniform. But while we’ve seen him playing funny cop quite often, he’s on more serious grounds this time around. “I tend to play on occasions authority figures. That’s the way it goes. I think I got that big dumb white guy look… But this character actually was more of a straight character for me, more of a sincere character. Normally I’m a little more over the top but this one was a more grounded guy… It was just fun to change it up,” admits Rob Riggle.

The actors might have walked into a fairly new territory of role-playing, but they confess that while the film was scripted, they had a lot of fun at improvising. “When we decided to do the script, the studio basically told me that they were interested in Damon and they told Damon they were interested in me. So we called each other and said, ‘we love the premise of the movie. We love the story of it, but we would love to open it up and be able to improvise.’ And so we went back to the director and the writer and the producer’s and said ‘we would love to do it as a package if we can kind of open it up. At the time it was, my character was the crazy guy and his character was more of the straight guy and we thought, we see it more as a two handed where it’s not straight guy-funny guy. It’s just two guys and we’re loose and we’re improvising and you know, going back and forth rather than set up joke… we improvised quite a bit,” says Jake Johnson.

To add some female flavor is Nina Dobrev. She plays Josie, a beautiful new waitress at the guys’ hangout restaurant. Also, Natasha Leggero, who plays Annie brings many laughs in a different way. “Well my character, I was very surprised. You almost saw my entire vagina… I’m definitely cast without pants more than pants. So it was just sort of a natural fit for me,” explainsLeggero. Jake Johnson adds, “It was really funny. She killed it.”

Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. are a complimenting match. While you’d think it’s because of their work on television series New Girl, they tells us that this came before Damon returned for season three. “The thing about the New Girl situation was, I had only done the pilot with Jake before we did this movie. I came in on the third season after we had finished shooting Let’s Be Cops so there’s really nothing to really compare it to,” says Damon Wayans, Jr. The actor’s agree they had fun at improvising and working with a fun and fearless cast.

Let’s Be Cops is the perfect way to start the school year. Opens in theaters this Wednesday, August 13th.
