Call it a love story or a terror movie. Tierra de Sangre is a film that engages viewers with intense dialogue, innocence, faith, evil, but most importantly the strength of a woman. Following the life of Magdalena Cortes, a young female who is strong minded, fearless, and captivating with her beautiful essence, we discover the dark secrets held in the vineyards of Tierra de Sangre. When a French man named Louis (Francisco Pizarro Sáenz de Urtury) arrives in Chile, he is struck by her beauty, but the truth about wine and its most important ingredient will determine a destiny Magdalena never saw coming. Tierra de Sangre is a bittersweet story that will awaken emotions many films today have forgotten.

I got to sit and talk with the beautiful Aislinn Derbez, who tells me about bringing life to her character and the challenges that came with it.

Jessica G. Ferrer for Entertainment Affair: Aislin, Your character Magdalena is the epitome of woman. While tragedy seems to play a strong role her life, she fights. She never gives up. Was this among the reasons you took on the role of Magdalena?
Aislinn Derbez: I thought the character was really interesting. Especially playing a part that is in the 1800s. I thought that was really special and it was my first movie doing ancient roles. Also, I like all the ark of the part because it has a lot of strength. At the beginning she’s very tough and then she becomes vulnerable. She falls in love and also she makes a lot of mistakes because of that and she gets her strength again.

EA: It’s such a strong message, especially for the female viewer.
AD: I like that.

EA: Tierra de Sangre is a historic piece, was there anything intimidating for you as an actor?
AD: I had to speak in another accent. It was very difficult because I didn’t even know how people from Chile speak. I had never gone there and I had never heard Chilean people before because in Mexico it’s not very common. They just said, you have to speak in a neutral accent, and I thought it was my accent because I thought my Mexican was neutral and suddenly they tell me that neutral accent is just Chilean, but a little bit less tough… I was really scared at the beginning because I was like oh my god, how am I gonna do this. I started listening to them and had coaching for one week and I did it. I really like that part because it was a great challenge.

EA: How did you come to be a part of this project?
AD: They watched other things I did, the producer and the director and they just contacted me to be on the part.

EA: Was there any particular or specific preparation for the role of Magdalena?
AD: It was specifically playing a part of a woman of that time because women were very different in that time. We have changed a lot as women. We have changed a lot in a lot of ways. Especially in being able to express ourselves. It was challenging because I was wondering how a woman from that time would act. But I thought I could come up with this strength, but at the same time with this woman that was like a little introverted, but also very tough, and also a secure woman.

EA: Is there a particular role that attracts Aislinn Derbez or are you more adventurous with the roles you select?
AD: I like to do different things all the time. I like to look for different roles.

EA: The tagline to the film, which is also mentioned during the movie, “Todo tiene su precio” (Everything comes with a price), is that something you believe to be true?
AD: Yea, it’s kind of like negative, but I think it’s also a positive thing. It’s like karma… If you do well you’re gonna get back well. If you do things wrong, it has a price.

EA: Because this film portrays the female in such a strong way, what do you believe are the qualities a female should posses?
AD: To be confident, to not be afraid of what other people can think or say about you. Know yourself, know who you are so you can be confident about it so you don’t break or become shaky with other thoughts. Know your strengths, but also know your weaknesses. And also know how to be vulnerable and know how to be sensitive.

EA: This story is not only appealing to adults, but also to a younger demographic. However, sometimes skepticism gets in the way of watching a movie as good as Tierra de Sangre. What can you tell younger women who have yet to decide on whether or not to watch this film?
AD: They love Twilight and all those kinds of movies, so its kind of similar but it has a deep message. I think it’s really fun and it has a lot of different genres together, like Romans, like mystery and action.

Directed by James Katz, Tierra de Sangre or The Vineyard also incorporates the historic plague that took over France during the mid 1800’s, which directed cultivation to the vineyards of Chile. Tierra de Sangre will play in select theaters on January 8th. To see the listings, purchase tickets and demand a screening in your city visit: https://www.tugg.com/titles/the-vineyard.
