FOX Entertainment’s Winter 2019 TCA Press Tour Day

by Rocio Vidal | February 13, 2019

Charlie Collier, CEO of FOX Entertainment, kicked things off with an executive session. During this time, he discussed the exciting prospects for FOX Entertainment and answered some questions from TV critics in attendance.

The theme for FOX’s day at the TCA press tour was “Let’s Go Crazy,” which falls in line with the network’s bold past – from its launch as a fourth broadcast network, to its $1.6 billion investment in NFL rights in 1993, to greenlighting quirky singing competition “The Masked Singer.”

While Charlie didn’t go into detail about FOX’s recent programming announcements, he did mention FOX’s renewal of “The Simpsons” for two additional seasons (31 and 32) and mentioned the series orders for “Duncanville” and “Bless the Harts,” the newest additions to FOX’s animation slate that will premiere next season.

However, he touched on a few other programming-related points:

  • WWE “SmackDown Live,” which is scheduled to debut for FOX in October, will air on Friday nights, which means “Last Man Standing” will be moved to another night of the week
  • While FOX Sports, FS1 and other FOX networks will have “ties to the WWE world,” “SmackDown” will be FOX’s only WWE content
  • Charlie reiterated FOX’s ability to use live and near-live experiences as “promotional platforms” to send audiences off to great storytelling
  • When asked about the future of live-action sitcoms for FOX, Charlie said “we’re going to play in every genre, and we’re going to look to do it really well, and use these promotional platforms to benefit them”
  • FOX had nothing to announce regarding “24” or “Scream Queens”

After the executive session, FOX hosted panel discussions for “Bless the Harts,” “Gotham” and “The Masked Singer,” as well as a panel titled “Voices of Drama.”

Bless the Harts
In September, FOX made its first animated series order in a couple of years, giving a 13-episode straight-to-series pickup to "Bless the Harts,” a half-hour comedy from “The Last Man on Earth” co-executive producer Spivey and executive producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Seth Cohen. The network describes the series as a look at a group of broke southerners always struggling for the American Dream of status and wealth, but already are rich in friends, family and laughter.

Its voice cast is led by Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Maya Rudolph (The Good Place), Jillian Bell (Saturday Night Live) and Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors). The series is produced by 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Lord Miller.

Gotham
As its final episode draws near, “Gotham” will present several characters from the DC Comics universe. EP John Stevens revealed that David Mazouz will indeed wear the final Batman costume at the end of series, but there’s also a taller guy standing in the costume. Bane will show up this season, and at San Diego Comic-Con it was revealed that the muscular Batman bad guy will break Alfred’s back this season, a big plot point from the comics.

The Masked Singer
In January, FOX renewed the breakout celebrity competition series for a second season. “The Masked Singer” is this season’s No. 1 new series and top unscripted show.

Based on the hit South Korean format, “The Masked Singer” features celebrities facing off against one another with one major twist: each singer is shrouded from head to toe in an elaborate costume, complete with full face mask to conceal his or her identity. Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke serve on the panel, playing detective alongside series host Nick Cannon.
