Marvel Studios' “Avengers: Endgame” Global Press Conference

by Becky García | April 29, 2019

If one thing was clear at the “Avengers: Endgame” press conference held in downtown Los Angeles was that there would be no spoilers, none at all. Not only would there be no spoilers, but the cast would tread on everything so lightly that pretty much no information was divulged during the event. We should’ve figured that when we were invited to only watch a 5-7 minute footage screening about the film rather than an actual media screening so as to avoid any kind of spoilers from the media as well.

The global press conference was hosted by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau and began with a curtain falling to showcase part of the cast on stage along with some empty chairs which were later filled by fellow actors. In attendance were Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Danai Gurira, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, directors Anthony and Joe Russo and producer Kevin Feige all on stage. Some chairs remained empty and were meant to represent their fallen comrades.

The close to 45 minute press conference mostly served to reminisce about the 11 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe since everyone was very careful so as to not accidentally reveal any spoilers about the film. Overall, the actors limited their remarks and statements to what being part of the franchise has meant to them.

No real details about what happens in the movie were discussed, but it was described by the Russo brothers as “cathartic” when asked by a journalist to describe the movie in one word. Feige added that one of the things that sets “Endgame” apart from the 21 other films is that this film is an actual ending.

Anthony Russo said the movie explores “how these heroes deal with loss. True loss. How does a hero move forward from that moment? How do they move forward as individuals how do they move forward as a team?”

As time passed by, it was clear that there was a feeling or sense of sadness in this press conference. That sentiment was echoed by Ruffalo when he added, “There’s a sadness to this press conference; it’s kind of bittersweet.”

Larson explained how this film was the beginning for her since it was the first time she played “Captain Marvel” without an actual script or previous movie to reference since this movie was filmed prior to “Captain Marvel”. She also mentioned how excited she was for the movie to come out so she could finally talk about it since she’s been keeping quiet about it for so long. She also treaded lightly on it by saying she “was scared” to answer any questions without giving any spoilers. Her fellow actors felt the same.

When it came to questions from the media present, the responses were pretty much the same, “we can’t discuss that”, which basically leads us to watch the movie in order to have all of our questions answered.

“Avengers: Endgame” is now playing in theatres.
