What Does "The Help" Mean To You?

by EAStaff | December 9, 2011

The Help producing partner Participant Media joined book author Katherine Stockett for a special screening of the movie in celebration of Latina Empowerment December 6 in Los Angeles.

In The Help, a group of extraordinary women risk everything to tell the stories of their treatment as maids working for the white families of Mississippi in the 1960s. Their courage helps to open doors and break down cultural barriers, but many of the issues raised in the film still exist four decades later.

Participant Media's mission is to "To tell compelling, entertaining stories that also create awareness of the real issues that shape our lives. The company seeks to entertain audiences first, then to invite them to participate in making a difference".

According to Kristen Irving, Director of Campaign Development, Social Action at Participant Media "This film is very empowering and is helping people who are caretakers for other families and working under unfair conditions to stand up for themselves". Participant is working with other non-profit organizations to help give a voice to issues that resonate in the film.

In association with the National Domestic Workers Alliance, TakePart.com/TheHelp the social action website sponsored by Participant Media, interviewed domestic workers from around the country about the issues facing nannies, housekeepers and caretakers, and what “help” means to them.
