Highlights from Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” Virtual Press Conference

Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” is an original new series set in post-blip New York City where former Avenger Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.

Entertainment Affair recently joined Renner and Steinfeld along with co-stars Vera Farmiga and Tony Dalton, series director and executive producer Rhys Thomas, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, for a virtual press conference to talk about the six-episode series. Check out a few highlights of the event below.

Feige and Thomas on giving Hawkeye his own story and the inspiration behind it.
“The character's history is vast and also the Matt Fraction comics, which I'm sure people have been spending a lotta time talking about over these last few press days, was a big tonal inspiration for us,” said Feige. “It's such amazing source material. I think early on, talk was about, that specific tone that that Fraction run has, as a real linchpin. I mean, ultimately, it's funny but again, as we were saying about the show, it's also intimate in this amazing character study,” Thomas added.

Renner and Steinfeld talk about the dynamic between their characters and how they set up this relationship.
“Kate sees Clint as someone who, despite his past, wants to do good and wants to help people,” said Steinfeld. “And that’s all she wants to do in life. She’s inspired and motivated by him. She wants to be at his level, and she is very overeager. Clint puts up with a lot, but Kate delivers at the end of the day.” Clint and Kate “can be polar opposites in a lot of ways,” Renner added, “but they have a lot of congruent values, belief systems, and skillsets. So, they have a wonderfully complicated relationship, friendship, and partnership.”

Renner discussed Clint's survivor guilt from Avengers: Endgame and how it effects his character in the series.
“I suppose it’s survivor guilt outside of just dealing with the loss. You know, there’s a lot of things that are lost. It’s addressed in this show which I think is beautifully intimate. It brings our characters closer together as well as the audience. Managing losses is the superhero game,” Renner said.

Hawkeye's Christmas setting will be an integral part of the storyline, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
“This is fun because it is a Christmas story that is taking place during the holidays,” Feige said. “It also is based on early discussions about a limited time period, about setting a series in -- not quite real time, but essentially in a six-day period. Six episodes, six days. Will Clint make it home for Christmas?” he continued.

Vera Farmiga expressed her interest in working with Steinfeld and putting that mother-daughter relationship on screen.
“To be honest with you I have marveled at this young lady since that first movie,” Farmiga said of Steinfeld. “I also loved this, sort of this very delicate and complex maternal relationship. It is a tricky sport raising a successful daughter, especially when the daughter and the mom have different ideas of what that success means.”

Tony Dalton joins the MCU as Jacques Duquesne, a popular character from comics.
“He’s sort of a family friend, and then he becomes in love with Eleanor Bishop (Farmiga), and they have a little bit of a relationship. You kind of don’t know where he’s coming from. I don’t know. What the hell else am I supposed to say,” he laughed.

The fan-favorite character Lucky the Pizza Dog will also make his MCU debut in the series.
“Well, if you’re going to do Clint and Kate, you have to do Lucky,” Feige said as the stars laughed. “That was pretty much a given.”

“Hawkeye” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on Nov. 24, 2021.
