Demián Bichir Unpacks ViX’s Bold New Thriller ‘El Dentista’
ViX is venturing into darker territory with its latest original series El Dentista, a gothic thriller set in 19th-century Veracruz. Inspired by Julio Rojas’ novel The Foreign Visitor, the series stars Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir as forensic dentist Nolasco Black, whose search for justice takes a shocking turn when the trail of brutal murders points to none other than Jack the Ripper.
Entertainment Affair’s Raffael Alejandro talked with Bichir about his creative process, the scope of the project, and why El Dentista feels so timely.
“The most ambitious project ViX has done”
For Bichir, El Dentista stands out not only as a starring role but also as a landmark production:
“It’s the type of project that elevates ViX to another level,” he explained. “I’ve done series in the U.S. and in Mexico, and I can say this one is crafted with the highest quality in every sense. From the direction to the costumes, everything is in its place to truly transport you to Veracruz in the late 1800s.”
The actor also praised the team behind the series, pointing out how every detail, down to the food shown on screen, was carefully chosen to build a fully immersive world.

A character torn between grief and obsession
Bichir describes Nolasco Black as one of the richest roles he’s played. A widower still haunted by loss, Nolasco is drawn into the investigation both by duty and personal demons. To prepare, Bichir immersed himself in the world of forensic dentistry:
“Part of the beauty of being an actor is that you get paid to learn about life. I studied what it means to be a forensic dentist, all the challenges they face, and how that intersects with Nolasco’s own battles with grief and addiction.”
Camila Sodi’s powerful presence
The series also stars Camila Sodi as Sofía, a brilliant chemist who defies the restrictions of her time. Bichir says her character adds both strength and sensuality to the story:
“What Camila brings is extraordinary—rebellion, intelligence, sensuality. She elevates the story and creates a partnership with Nolasco that’s built on admiration as much as attraction.”
Their relationship, he hints, strikes a delicate balance between romance and professional respect, keeping viewers on edge about what might unfold.

A feminist thread in a gothic thriller
While the murders drive the plot, Bichir emphasized that El Dentista also carries a strong social commentary:
“It’s a feminist series in many ways. It speaks to the rights women have fought for, the violence they’ve endured, and the rebellion against that oppression. Those themes make it not just a period piece, but something urgent and contemporary.”
What’s next for El Dentista?
With only the first season set to debut, fans are already wondering if there will be more. Bichir is optimistic:
“Julio Rojas’ novel is filled with exquisite details that could give us many seasons. We hope audiences embrace it and that we get to continue exploring this world.”
El Dentista premieres September 19, 2025 on ViX Premium in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and on Prime Video in Mexico and Latin America.
