Ricky Martin lit up the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards with a history-making night at New York’s UBS Arena. The global superstar became the first-ever recipient of MTV’s “Latin Icon Award”, created to honor artists who’ve broken barriers and carried Latin music across the world.

Before the big moment, J Balvin set the stage with a heartfelt tribute, calling Ricky a true pioneer: “He didn’t just open the door for Latin music crossover… he built it from the ground up.”

Then came one of the most explosive performances of the show. Backed by 10 dancers and a full band, Ricky tore through a medley of his greatest hits — “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” “Pégate,” “Vente Pa’ Ca,” “María,” and “Cup of Life.” With production led by Jamie King and choreography from Tricia Miranda and Darrion Gallegos, the set brought the house down and marked the launch of Ricky’s new music era.

The award itself was presented by none other than Jessica Simpson, who got emotional remembering when she opened for Ricky on his Livin’ La Vida Loca tour back in 1999. “He’s my inspiration, one of my idols,” she said. “And after four decades, he’s still one of the most dynamic performers I know.”

A visibly moved Ricky accepted the honor, thanking his fans worldwide and dedicating the moment to his children. “It’s been 40 years… we’re still here, uniting countries, breaking boundaries, and keeping music alive,” he said.

With new projects and concert dates on the horizon, Ricky Martin’s latest milestone proves once again why he remains one of the most influential Latin artists of all time.
