Brad Pitt is heading into the wilderness in Heart of the Beast, the new adventure thriller from director David Ayer, arriving exclusively in theaters September 25.

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for the film, offering a closer look at Pitt as James Belmont, a Special Forces officer who finds himself stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness following a harrowing plane crash. His only companion is his combat dog, Odin, and surviving the unforgiving landscape will depend on the bond the two have built together.

The trailer promises an intense survival story as Belmont and Odin face brutal weather, treacherous terrain and the psychological toll of being isolated far from civilization. But beneath the action, Heart of the Beast appears to have a surprisingly emotional story at its center.

Ayer has described the relationship between Belmont and Odin as the heart of the film, exploring two characters shaped by trauma who depend on one another when everything else has been stripped away. Pitt has similarly described Belmont as a “haunted soul,” while praising the canine performers who helped bring Odin to life.

Odin is primarily portrayed by Uber, a German Shepherd with real-world mountain rescue experience. Three of Uber’s sons were also used during production, helping filmmakers capture the demanding physical sequences required for the wilderness adventure.

Although the movie is set in Alaska, filming took place primarily on New Zealand’s South Island, utilizing remote mountains, glaciers and the rugged landscape surrounding Queenstown. The natural environment plays a major role in the film, giving Belmont and Odin’s struggle for survival an imposing backdrop.

Heart of the Beast reunites Pitt with the kind of character-driven filmmaking that places much of the story directly on his shoulders. With a deliberately small principal cast, the film appears designed to rely heavily on Pitt’s performance and his relationship with Odin rather than a sprawling ensemble.

Joining Pitt are J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe.

With its combination of survival thriller, sweeping wilderness adventure and the emotional connection between a soldier and his dog, Heart of the Beast looks to deliver something more personal than the traditional man-versus-nature story.
