Universal Studios Hollywood has officially set Wednesday, September 16 as the opening date for “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift,” its first outdoor, high-speed roller coaster.

Inspired by Universal Pictures’ Fast & Furious franchise, the new attraction will reach speeds of up to 72 MPH, making it the fastest roller coaster in the Universal Destinations & Experiences portfolio.

Located on the Upper Lot, “Hollywood Drift” features 4,100 feet of aerial track, four launches, an inverted dive loop, twisted pretzel loop and inverted stall, with riders experiencing forces of up to 3.6 Gs.

The coaster’s standout technology comes from its individually rotating ride vehicles, which can turn 360 degrees to recreate the sensation of drifting. Guests will ride in cars modeled after four vehicles from the Fast Saga: the Dodge Charger, Mazda RX-7, Nissan Skyline GT-R and Toyota Supra. Each also features an independent audio system with unique engine and sound effects.

The attraction makes use of Universal Studios Hollywood’s hillside terrain, sending riders over and under portions of the Starway escalators while offering panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley and Universal’s movie studio.

Fans will also find an elaborate garage-inspired queue filled with props and recreations from the films, including vehicles and stunt equipment from Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, F9 and Fast X. Original murals by artist Tristan Eaton will pay tribute to the franchise, including the iconic final race from 2001’s The Fast and the Furious.

The opening comes as Fast & Furious celebrates its 25th anniversary. The franchise has generated more than $7 billion worldwide, with the next film, Fast Forever, scheduled for March 2028.
