Prime Video is adding another romance to its lineup with The Last Sunrise, but stars Maia Reficco and Fernando Lindez say there’s much more to the film than its dreamy summer love story.

Based on the novel by After author Anna Todd, The Last Sunrise follows Ry (Reficco), a college student living with a chronic illness who travels to Mallorca with her mother, Isolde (Eva Longoria). While there, she unexpectedly falls for Julián (Lindez), a relationship that encourages her to embrace life in the moment as her worsening condition and long-hidden family secrets threaten to change everything.

Ahead of the film’s August 26 premiere, Reficco and Lindez talked with Iván Emilio about bringing Ry and Julián’s romance to the screen, working with Eva Longoria and spending an unforgettable summer filming in Mallorca.

For Reficco and Lindez, the opportunity to lead a romantic drama of this scale was an exciting one. Reficco pointed to the combination of Anna Todd’s story, the beautiful Mallorca setting and the chance to work alongside Longoria as some of the elements that made the project particularly special.

But despite the film’s romantic premise, Reficco says audiences may be surprised by just how emotional the story becomes.

While the trailers understandably focus on Ry and Julián’s romance, she explained that the film has considerably more depth beneath the surface. The individual journeys of the characters—and the ways they evolve beyond their romantic relationships—became an important part of what attracted her to the story.

Making the central romance believable also meant developing genuine chemistry between Reficco and Lindez. The two actors didn’t know each other before working on the film and admitted they were both somewhat shy when they first met. That awkwardness didn’t last long. Lindez explained that they quickly clicked, developed a close friendship and became increasingly comfortable with one another as production continued.

That friendship ultimately helped shape Ry and Julián’s connection, with Lindez believing the trust and camaraderie they developed off camera naturally translated to the screen.

The experience also gave both young actors the opportunity to work alongside Eva Longoria. Lindez described sharing the set with someone of Longoria’s experience as a privilege, particularly because of how much younger performers can learn simply by watching an established actor work. He credited Longoria with bringing a positive and constructive energy to the production both in front of and behind the camera.

And then there was Mallorca. The Spanish island provides the picturesque setting for Ry and Julián’s summer romance, but filming there also gave the cast the opportunity to enjoy some of that summer magic themselves.

Reficco enthusiastically recalled spending her weekends exploring Mallorca with friends, visiting different beaches and coves, going out to eat and enjoying the opportunity to speak Spanish throughout the production. Despite the demanding filming schedule, she described the experience as something of a dream.

Their memorable summer continued after production. Reficco shared that she was especially excited about releasing her first song, marking another step in her career as she continues pursuing her passion for music alongside acting. Lindez, meanwhile, fulfilled a childhood dream of his own by purchasing a classic car from 1986 and taking it on a road trip across Spain.

Those experiences feel particularly fitting for a film whose heart lies in embracing the present and making the most of the time we have.
