Ben Falcone agrees, with Melissa McCarthy there is never a dull moment. As her husband and business partner he revealed that the same energy and atmosphere they have at work, they too share at home.

The two worked together to bring their new Universal Pictures comedy film, The Boss. An unexpected fun comedy featuring a dynamic cast, including Kristen Bell, Tyler Labine, Peter Dinklage, and Kathy Bates. The story follows a character who was born fifteen years ago. Back when Falcone and McCarthy met as students at The Groundlings, the Los Angeles-based improv troupe, a forceful and confident Michelle Darnell was born. Longtime friend Steve Mallory joined the couple in the writers room and helped shape the script of what is now The Boss.

Who is Michelle Darnell? The 47th richest person in America. She’s a comeback kid, whose worked hard to get to where she is today. Described as an icon, a celebrity, a billionaire, and a felon, Michelle Darnell never gives up. On creating this character, Melissa McCarthy explained, I just could never let her go.She said, the more I thought about her I loved that kind of unbridled confidence in that Im gonna wear what I want, do what I want, say what I want  and we don't get to see that a lot with female characters. And then for me, the joy of playing her was also to know and to try to show why she's like that. Thats really why I love her. She's like that cause she kind of hurt enough to build up a wall.

She elaborates, Most people that are just like I'm the only one that exists. I don't need anyone.  Some people hate that. I always go, God, I wonder what made them like that. Like I always wanna know what makes someone build up that wall. Theres usually a pretty interesting story there.Similar to Michelle’s history as it evolves in the film, we learn what happened and how her past shaped her individuality. Shortly after Darnell is released from prison, she reunites with her former assistant Claire, played by Kristen Bell. A character Bell describes as the straight man.Claire is what Michelle is not.

On beginning the film with a bang, without giving too much away Melissa confessed it was a dream come true. That was the dreamiest thing to do cause for two weeks I got to hang out and rehearse with dancers, which is like a weird dream Ive always had. I started to feel a lot coolerI gotta go guys, I gotta go to dance rehearsal.I threw that around a lot cause I knew I wasn't gonna get to say it for very long.Plus, we get to hear a never before McCarthy rap.

Falcone, who directed the film shared one of his favorite scenes, which he confessed was also one of the most challenging. An all-out street Dandelions vs. Darlings brawl (think girl scouts vs. trained fighters). We knew that we wanted to make a Gangs of New York style street fight with children and adults and the logistics behind that get a little bit trickyWe strategically put stunt women that were moms. The director added, theres a surprising amount of visual effects in this movie. The Dandelions are the cookie-selling scouts and the Darlings are the brownie sellers (Michelle and Claire’s empire).

On choosing a villain, Renault emanates power and as Darnell’s adversary, Falcone agrees there was no better choice than Peter Dinklage. Hes such an actors actor that Ive always just admired him and once we got him it it just felt like a perfect, perfect fit.Peter Dinklage is Renault.

The actresses got a little personal and expressed their thoughts on individuality and success. As a mother of two daughters Kristen Bell told us what she tells her daughters, What I'm trying to do with my girls is encourage them to be unique and find what makes them unique and let them know that if you're unique you're irreplaceable.Melissa McCarthy, who also has girls commented, You try to let them be exactly who they are. You try to share a good example. She shared a personal anecdote, A biggie for me is take the compliment. Im hard on people for that. When you say, oh you look greatand then so many women for the next twenty minutes, its like: I got it on sale. Its actually terrible. If I turn around youd hate it. I look terrible. I got one shorter leg…’ you just basically shoved the compliment back in my face. Now I just say thank you and walk offIts okay to like who you are.

Individuality is one way to look at The Boss. The characters are all different and each have a history of their own. Specifically with Darnell’s relationships and her individuality is one we get laugh with, cry with, and empathize with.

The Boss opens in theaters worldwide on April 8th.
