Extended Family: A Fresh Take on Sitcoms with Heart and Humor

by Rocio Vidal | March 3, 2024

NBC's Extended Family stands out as a unique addition to the sitcom genre, blending heartfelt family dynamics with clever humor. At the NBC Winter Press Tour, the creators and cast shared insights into the show's development and their creative process, offering a glimpse into what makes Extended Family resonate with audiences.

Mike O'Malley, the creator and executive producer, reflected on the storytelling evolution of the show, stating, "You’re looking for the conflict within the family... But we found that these guys are also likable that when we have them teaming up together to go against something rather than have this internal conflict, that’s something we found in the later episodes that I think is working quite well." This approach underlines a shift from traditional sitcom dynamics, emphasizing collaborative problem-solving over internal family strife.

The star-studded cast, including Jon Cryer, Donald Faison, and Abigail Spencer, brings a diverse array of comedic and dramatic experiences to the table. Spencer, known for her roles in more dramatic series, expressed her joy in the sitcom format: "there’s more ease because we can move into the laughter and the fun and the joy of it, but I think the delicate dance of any storytelling is that it’s rooted in something real, and family dynamics are very real."

Faison, reflecting on his sitcom journey, shared his enthusiasm: "I’ve been waiting for this forever…  I remember as a youth, I always wanted to be on NBC on a sitcom. And when I was young, “Cosby” was the only one in New York City that I can remember that had young Black characters on it. And so to now be on NBC a few years later, it’s amazing. This is the dream. I’m living it." His sentiment encapsulates the passionate commitment of the cast and crew in creating a show that feels both modern and nostalgic.

Cryer, with a wealth of sitcom experience, discussed the joy of working in this format: "It was always something I had just a gut level comfort with... It's kind of an addictive format. You just love it. It's great, great fun." His perspective highlights the enduring appeal of multi-cam sitcoms.

Extended Family promises to be a significant addition to NBC's comedy lineup, offering a fresh perspective on family life and relationships. With its blend of humor, heart, and a talented ensemble, the show is set to charm viewers and critics alike.
