“Pitch Perfect” Cast Hits the Right Note

by Lynnie Feliciano | September 26, 2012

“Pitch Perfect,” based on a book by Mickey Rapkin, takes a ‘behind the scenes’ glance at the efforts of an all female choral group to rebuild and redeem themselves after a catastrophic loss at an important competition. The group attempts to be one of the top groups in their craft at the collegiate circuit. This musical comedy takes the audience to the unknown and at times mocked world of a cappella singing groups.

The story follows Beca (Anna Kendrick) an introverted college freshman who without wanting it, gets sucked into the a cappella world. As a part of the all female singing group, The Bellas (Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean and Hana Mae Lee), she will interact with the other girls clashing personalities and will encourage them to change their old fashioned ways. The plot can be compared to other underdog/rivalry/coming of age films such as “Bring It On”, “Step Up” or “Drumline,” but its sharp humor and cleverness brings that classic teenage comedy formula to the next level.

“When we started developing the project we always thought of this as a comedy. When I first discovered the book “Pitch Perfect”, which the film is inspired by . . . My wife (Elizabeth Banks) and I, we went to a school where there was a lot of a cappella. None of us did it, but we knew . . . I specifically knew how ridiculous a cappella was, but also how entertaining and inspiring it was in another level. We just felt that it was a perfect platform for a comedy,” producer Max Handelman said.

To create this ‘geek chic’ world, the husband and wife production team recruited Emmy nominated writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock, New Girl) to develop a screenplay, and Tony Award winner, Jason Moore (Avenue Q), to direct the film.

Moore’s ability to combine the different elements that the script demanded made him an ideal candidate to direct this film. In “Pitch Perfect,” his first feature film as a director, he balances complicated musical numbers with an impeccable comedic mastery. “Jason is amazing. He is really smart. He is really on it. I think he sees everything from every angle. He is a smart enough person and he has such amazing taste, that it feels that he is the guy that makes you feel safe in an empty pool singing “No Diggity”, wondering if this is going to come across well. He was a great guy to have as the captain of the ship,” said Kendrick.

One of the film’s strengths is its amazing cast, led by Kendrick. The chemistry between the actors contributed to an on point comedic timing and witty humor. “In order to cast this film it required that the actors not only could sing and dance but that had great comedic skills. We are all very proud. They are just incredibly strong. They all fit exactly their roles; they carved out very specific moments for themselves in the film. It doesn’t feel like any actor is shoehorned into their character. I think that is one of the reasons the film works as well as it does,” Handelman commented.

All the characters worked in unison to create a believable and hilarious universe. “They all had a real sense of who were those young kids. We needed them to be real, but we also needed them to be funny. In that ‘playing of a character’ real way. But they also had to be able to sing. Everyone had to be able to do all those things. Which meant some people had to be counted out. People who couldn’t do their own singing. One, I come from Broadway and I couldn’t imagine how that would’ve worked. But also because their unique voices and their unique comic rhythms needs to come out in the songs,” explains Moore. He also mentions the importance of the musical numbers being amusing, exciting and funny, in order to give the characters a chance to express themselves.

Among the excellent cast, Wilson stands out as Fat Amy, making the audience laugh every time she appears on screen. Lee (Lilly) and Banks (Gail, the commentator of the a cappella singing competition) developed very interesting characters, with some of the best lines and moments on the film.

“Pitch Perfect” mixes effectively the musical performance craze with a well thought quirky comedy. All the elements in this production work well together, creating a feel good light movie that honors its genre and guarantees a good time.
