Niki Lopez & Kevin Chacon on Preserving Latin Culture in ‘Santiago of the Seas’

by Becky García | October 8, 2020

Nickelodeon has a brand-new action-adventure animated series coming to your living room. Santiago of the Seas tells the story of 8-year-old Santiago "Santi" Montes, a brave and kind-hearted pirate as he embarks on daring rescues, searches for treasures and keeps the high seas safe in a fantastical Caribbean world. The series, created and executive produced by boricua Niki López is infused with a Spanish-language and Latino-Caribbean culture curriculum, which makes this show perfect for Latino families. We recently interviewed Niki as well as Santiago himself, Kevin Chacon, to talk about the series and how important preserving the Spanish language and the Latin culture is and how this series aims to do just that.

Santiago of the Seas premieres on Nick Jr. Friday, Oct. 9, at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT)
