Apples Never Fall: A Deep Dive into Family Dynamics and Mystery

by Rocio Vidal | March 3, 2024

Peacock's Apples Never Fall, based on Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel, is a gripping drama series that delves into the complexities of family life and the unraveling of secrets. The show's adaptation, set against the backdrop of professional tennis in South Florida, adds a dynamic layer to the storytelling.

Melanie Marnich, the showrunner and executive producer, emphasizes the richness of Moriarty's work and the adjustments made for television. She explains, "We changed some of the characters, some of their intentions, some of the relationships, but really stayed pretty true to her beautiful book."

Annette Bening, portraying Joy Delaney, reflects on the evolving landscape for mature women in acting. She notes the transformation in roles available and the shift in stereotypes, crediting projects like  Apples Never Fall for these changes. Bening says, "I could tell [Melanie Marnich] was obsessed and that she had this really strong commitment to it and vision of it. She really got into it. So once I saw that and everything, I thought, wow, this is just such an opportunity. It was really fun for me because I had never done something over so many episodes. So as we were working, we were talking and changing, and it was because of Melanie because she established this atmosphere where we were all in it together"

Alison Brie, playing Amy Delaney, discusses her character's unique traits and the creative process behind her portrayal. "The way that Melanie has written the show I found extremely compelling," she says, highlighting the depth of the characters and the show's narrative structure.

Jake Lacy, another cast member, shares his perspective on the role of Troy Delaney and the show's approach to character development. He remarks, "I know very well the guy who's the first one. And me as a person is trying to get to the second as is Troy."

Apples Never Fall promises to be a compelling series that intertwines family drama with mystery, driven by strong characterizations and thoughtful adaptations. The show is poised to captivate audiences with its nuanced exploration of familial bonds and the secrets that can both bind and break.
