Amazon MGM Unveils ‘Highlander’ and ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel at CinemaCon 2026

Amazon MGM Studios made a bold, theatrical-first statement during its CinemaCon 2026 presentation, delivering a high-energy showcase packed with major IP, star-driven originals, and crowd-pleasing surprises. Taking over The Dolby Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the studio didn’t just preview its upcoming slate—it reaffirmed a long-term commitment to the theatrical experience, unveiling an ambitious plan to release at least 15 films annually in the years ahead.
Hosted by Head of Domestic Theatrical Distribution Kevin Wilson, the presentation underscored the studio’s growing momentum. “We’ve delivered results. Four months. Four films. Over $670 million at the box office,” Wilson told exhibitors, pointing to the success of Project Hail Mary as a key example of Amazon MGM’s expanding theatrical footprint in 2026.

The evening opened on a stylish and musical note as Grammy Award winner Jon Batiste took center stage to debut the score for The Thomas Crown Affair. The energy carried into an appearance from Michael B. Jordan—who is directing, writing, and starring—alongside Adria Arjona, teasing a sleek reimagining of the iconic heist film set to arrive in theaters on March 5, 2027.
Amazon MGM continued to spotlight its momentum with Project Hail Mary, as Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Ryan Gosling returned to thank exhibitors following the film’s strong theatrical performance earlier this year—further reinforcing the studio’s message that audiences are showing up for big-screen storytelling.

One of the night’s biggest crowd moments came with a trip to Eternia, as Masters of the Universe took over the stage. Director Travis Knight joined stars Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes to unveil new footage, previewing the film ahead of its June 5, 2026 theatrical release and signaling a major franchise play for the studio.
The tone shifted into offbeat comedy as Hugh Jackman and Nicholas Braun introduced The Sheep Detectives, debuting an extended look at the witty mystery set for May 8, 2026. That energy quickly escalated into full spectacle as director David Leitch and Pete Davidson brought the house down with How to Rob a Bank, teasing the high-octane heist film ahead of its September 4, 2026 release, with co-stars Anna Sawai and Nicholas Hoult appearing via message.

Adding to the studio’s genre diversity, Mahershala Ali and director Bassam Tariq unveiled a first look at Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, highlighting Amazon MGM’s continued investment in filmmaker-driven storytelling alongside its larger franchise titles.
One of the most talked-about reveals of the night came with the official unveiling of Spaceballs: The New One, confirming the long-awaited sequel to Spaceballs. Director Josh Greenbaum was joined by returning cast members Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and Bill Pullman, alongside newcomers Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman. The film is currently set for a theatrical release on April 23, 2027, bringing one of comedy’s most beloved cult classics back to the big screen.
Even with production still underway, Henry Cavill sent a message to attendees, sharing an exclusive first look at Highlander, while the broader slate also includes titles like Verity, The Beekeeper 2, and I Play Rocky, further showcasing the studio’s wide-ranging approach across genres and audiences.

The presentation closed on an emotional and inspiring note as director Peter Farrelly joined AnnaSophia Robb, Stephan James, Anthony Ippolito, and Kiki Seto to debut first footage from I Play Rocky, the true story behind the making of the 1976 classic Rocky, closing the night with a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of theatrical storytelling.
With a slate that blends iconic IP, high-concept originals, and prestige-driven filmmaking, Amazon MGM Studios made its message clear at CinemaCon 2026: this isn’t an experiment—it’s a full-scale commitment to theatrical. And with at least 15 films per year on the horizon, the studio is positioning itself as a major force in shaping the future of the big screen experience.
