‘Pee-wee’s Playhouse’ Comes to Life in Nostalgic Netflix Is A Joke Celebration

The wonderfully weird world of Pee-wee’s Playhouse returned in spectacular fashion on May 4 as fans packed the iconic Greek Theatre for a one-night-only celebration honoring the beloved series’ 40th anniversary as part of the Netflix Is A Joke Festival—and Entertainment Affair was there to experience every surreal, emotional, and joyfully chaotic moment.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt, the live event transformed the Greek Theatre into a full-blown Pee-wee universe, complete with surprise reunions, nostalgic callbacks, legendary musical performances, and a crowd fully committed to the spirit of the Playhouse. Before the show even began, fans arrived dressed in elaborate cosplay ranging from Miss Yvonne-inspired looks to handmade Chairry outfits, instantly turning the venue into its own quirky fan convention.
The night kicked off in unforgettable fashion when Kate Pierson of The B-52s performed the iconic Pee-wee’s Playhouse theme song, immediately sending the crowd into a frenzy. Throughout the evening, Oswalt and Conky 2000 repeatedly revealed the secret word of the night—“FANTASTIC”—triggering massive screams and cheers from thousands of fans every single time it was mentioned.

What followed was a nonstop blend of comedy, music, nostalgia, and heartfelt tribute to the late Paul Reubens, whose influence could be felt in every corner of the show. Rather than leaning into sadness, the celebration focused on joy, absurdity, creativity, and the sense of fun that made Pee-wee’s Playhouse such a groundbreaking cultural phenomenon in the first place.
The lineup throughout the night was stacked with comedy and entertainment favorites including Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, Patti Harrison, Cheri Oteri, David Arquette, Sheng Wang, and Puddles Pity Party, all helping recreate the anything-can-happen energy that defined the original series.
Music played a huge role in the celebration as well. Danny Elfman delivered one of the night’s most memorable moments with a live performance of “The Breakfast Machine” from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, while also reviving a long-lost song connected to Reubens. Meanwhile, DEVO legends Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale served as part of the house band, a fitting tribute considering Mothersbaugh’s deep history with the original series. Armisen also jumped behind the drums for a hilarious musical tribute to the Del Rubio Triplets that had the audience roaring.

One of the evening’s most emotional moments came during a surprise reunion sequence involving Jambi the Genie granting a wish that brought several beloved Playhouse figures back together onstage, including a surprise appearance from Natasha Lyonne as Opal. Original puppeteers George McGrath, Kevin Carlson, Alison Mork, Eric Heitzman, and Wayne White were also part of the festivities, adding an authentic emotional connection to the legacy of the series.
And in true Pee-wee fashion, the celebration closed with complete madness—in the best possible way. The entire cast, performers, comedians, musicians, and puppeteers gathered onstage for a massive “Tequila” dance finale that felt equal parts concert, reunion, and fever dream. It was the kind of joyous chaos that perfectly captured why Pee-wee’s world has remained so beloved four decades later.
More than anything, the evening proved that Pee-wee’s Playhouse still resonates because of how unapologetically original it was—and still is. Weird, colorful, unpredictable, emotional, and endlessly creative, the anniversary celebration honored not just a television show, but an entire imaginative universe that continues to inspire generations of comedians, artists, and fans.
For one unforgettable night in Los Angeles, the Playhouse doors opened once again—and the result was absolutely FANTASTIC.
