Review: ‘Supergirl’ Soars with Emotion and Milly Alcock's Standout Performance

by EAStaff | June 24, 2026

The new DC Universe continues to build momentum with Supergirl, a visually stunning, emotionally resonant cosmic adventure that finally allows Kara Zor-El to step out of Superman's shadow and become a hero entirely on her own terms.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film embraces the cosmic scope and emotional depth of its comic book inspiration while delivering an adventure that feels distinct from anything we've seen in previous Superman-related films. Rather than simply retelling familiar origins, Supergirl takes audiences on a journey across a harsh and unpredictable galaxy, blending epic science-fiction spectacle with a surprisingly personal story about identity, grief, and finding purpose.

At the center of it all is Milly Alcock, who delivers a genuine standout performance. Alcock brings confidence, vulnerability, strength, and humor to Kara, creating a character who feels powerful yet deeply human. Whether she's facing impossible odds or confronting her own emotional scars, Alcock commands the screen and gives audiences a version of Supergirl that is both relatable and inspiring.

The film's cosmic setting provides some of the most impressive visuals seen in a DC film to date. From breathtaking alien landscapes to large-scale action sequences, Supergirl consistently feels ambitious in scope without losing sight of its emotional core. The result is a film that balances spectacle and character far more effectively than many recent superhero outings.

Jason Momoa's long-awaited debut as Lobo is another highlight. Bringing the perfect mix of attitude, humor, and chaos, Momoa appears to be having the time of his life in the role, and his chemistry with Alcock adds an entertaining dynamic to the adventure.

That said, the film isn't without its flaws. While Kara's journey remains consistently engaging, some supporting characters are given less development than they deserve, and the villain never feels quite as memorable as either Kara or Lobo. A few story beats also move at a brisk pace, occasionally sacrificing deeper exploration of the film's themes and relationships in favor of keeping the adventure moving forward.

What ultimately makes Supergirl work is its heart. Beneath the action, visual effects, and intergalactic adventure is a story about belonging, resilience, and learning who you are when the universe seems determined to pull you in every direction. Those themes give the film an emotional weight that elevates it beyond a standard superhero blockbuster.

Supergirl is among the most emotionally engaging entries in DC's recent slate and another encouraging sign for the future of the franchise. More importantly, it establishes Milly Alcock as a leading force in the DC Universe for years to come.

Supergirl opens exclusively in theaters on June 26, 2026.
