Netflix has released the first trailer for Ray Gunn, the long-awaited animated sci-fi noir from two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brad Bird, offering a first extended look at the retrofuturistic world of Metropia and revealing several new additions to its star-studded voice cast.

Led by Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits, Ray Gunn takes place in an alternate future imagined from the perspective of 1939. In the sprawling metropolis, humans and aliens live side by side, flying cars fill the skies and towering Art Deco-inspired buildings stretch toward the clouds. Beneath the city's polished exterior, however, lies a world of corruption and intrigue.

Rockwell voices Raymond Gunn, an old-school private investigator struggling to remain relevant as much of a detective's traditional legwork has been taken over by tiny automated "pry bots." Alongside his one-eyed alien partner Eye-Ra, voiced by Waits, Ray finds himself pulled into a dangerous case involving aliens, murder and Venus Nova (Johansson), one of Metropia's biggest and most controversial stars.

The newly announced voice cast includes Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck and Patton Oswalt.

For Bird, the filmmaker behind The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille, Ray Gunn has been more than three decades in the making. The filmmaker conceived the story early in his career as a collision between classic detective noir and science fiction, describing his original pitch for the movie as "The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers."

That combination is on full display in the trailer, which blends the glamorous imagery of a futuristic metropolis with the darker atmosphere of classic noir. Bird has cited Humphrey Bogart movies, Out of the Past and characters such as Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade among the influences behind the film.

Bird directs from his original story and a screenplay co-written with Matthew Robbins. John Lasseter, Bird, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg produce for Skydance Animation, with longtime Bird collaborator Michael Giacchino composing the score.

Before arriving on Netflix, Ray Gunn will receive a theatrical release beginning December 4 in select theaters, including a limited number of 70mm presentations. The film will then make its streaming debut globally on Netflix on December 18.

Ray Gunn is also set to have its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, which runs October 7-18.
