In a new Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, the legendary rock band discusses Rosalía’s influence, their creative evolution, and upcoming album Carnaval de Luz.

After five decades of shaping rock music, U2 is finding inspiration in a new generation of artists. In a new Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, the iconic Irish band revealed how Spanish superstar Rosalía inspired their new song, “The Mirror Maker (Rosalía),” from their upcoming 16th studio album, Carnaval de Luz, arriving November 13.

Filmed at Mount Temple, the Dublin school where U2 first came together, the conversation offered an intimate look at the band's musical evolution and the unexpected creative influences shaping its latest work.

Bono explained that Rosalía inspired “The Mirror Maker (Rosalía)” because of her ability to look beyond the surface and explore deeper artistic themes. Comparing her creative spirit to Patti Smith, he praised artists who challenge conventions and explore both the physical and metaphysical worlds.

“One of the great artists of our time,” Bono said of Rosalía, expressing his admiration for her extraordinary talent.

The frontman also revealed that watching Rosalía perform and listening to her music left a lasting impression. A previous interview between Rosalía and Lowe further deepened his appreciation, helping inspire the track.

Adding a playful twist, Bono shared that the band incorporated a sound influenced by The Clash, partly hoping to make Rosalía laugh and perhaps impress her. When asked whether he had shared the song with the Spanish singer, Bono confirmed that he had sent it to her.

U2 Returns to Its Roots

Beyond Rosalía’s influence, the interview brought U2 back to Mount Temple, where Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. began their musical journey nearly 50 years ago.

The band revisited old rehearsal spaces, shared memories of their early days, and reflected on the friendships that have kept them together. The visit also included a special performance for current students, marking an emotional return for Mullen, who described it as one of his top 10 shows.

With Carnaval de Luz, U2 continues to balance its signature sound with a desire to explore new musical territory. Rosalía’s influence reflects that creative curiosity, connecting two generations of artists who continue to push boundaries.

U2’s Carnaval de Luz arrives November 13.
