‘I Play Rocky’ Cast Reveals the Heart Behind Stallone’s Underdog Story

Nearly 50 years after Rocky became one of cinema's most beloved underdog stories, the remarkable journey behind its creation is stepping into the spotlight. Entertainment Affair attended the I Play Rocky global press conference on October 26 in Los Angeles, where director Peter Farrelly, star Anthony Ippolito, and the cast and filmmakers reflected on the determination, sacrifice, and collaboration behind the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film.
I Play Rocky follows a young Sylvester Stallone as he fights against Hollywood's expectations, refusing to give up his dream of starring in the screenplay he wrote. It's a story that mirrors the very spirit of Rocky, celebrating perseverance and the courage to believe in yourself.

Anthony Ippolito's Remarkable Transformation
At the center of the film is Anthony Ippolito, whose portrayal of Stallone earned enthusiastic praise from his fellow cast members.
Producer Toby Emmerich recalled Stallone's reaction after watching Ippolito's audition tape: "This is not an impersonation. This is a performance."
Ippolito revealed that he spoke with Stallone approximately a month before filming, describing the legendary actor as generous and open about revisiting a difficult period in his life.
But when praised for his performance, Ippolito was quick to credit his co-stars.
"I think when a good cast is around you, similar to how Sasha championed Stallone, they really empower you, and they take you to a different level," he shared.
The actor expressed his admiration for AnnaSophia Robb, Stephan James, Matt Dillon, and the rest of the ensemble, explaining how their support helped elevate his work.

The Scene That Left the Cast Speechless
One of the press conference's most memorable moments came when the cast discussed recreating an emotionally charged scene from the original Rocky, involving Stallone's confrontation with Mickey.
AnnaSophia Robb recalled being astonished by Ippolito's ability to transition between portraying Stallone and portraying Stallone as Rocky Balboa.
P.J. Byrne described the performance as so convincing that it felt as though the young actor had become Stallone himself.
Jay Duplass, who portrays original Rocky director John G. Avildsen, admitted that watching Ippolito rehearse the pivotal sequence left him deeply emotional.
The admiration was mutual, with Ippolito repeatedly emphasizing how the cast's generosity and encouragement helped him navigate the pressure of the role.

AnnaSophia Robb Brings Heart to the Film
While I Play Rocky celebrates Stallone's determination, it also highlights the people who helped him along the way.
AnnaSophia Robb portrays Sasha, Stallone's first wife, whose unwavering support becomes an essential part of his journey.
Farrelly made a point of recognizing her contribution during the press conference.
"This movie wouldn't work without AnnaSophia Robb," the director declared.
He praised the emotional authenticity of her performance, explaining that her reactions help audiences connect with Stallone's struggles and triumphs.
Matt Dillon, who portrays Stallone's father, Frank Stallone Sr., also discussed finding the humanity within a complicated father-son relationship, bringing another emotional layer to the story.

Recreating Rocky and Its Enduring Message
The filmmakers revealed that I Play Rocky was shot in just 34 days, with Farrelly working to recreate iconic locations and moments from the original film.
Some sequences required visual effects, but the director emphasized the importance of authenticity, even incorporating Buffalo Springfield's music into a writing scene after learning that Stallone listened to the band while creating his screenplay.
For screenwriter Peter Gamble, Stallone's journey resonated personally, reflecting his own experiences struggling to find recognition in Hollywood.
Ultimately, Farrelly believes the film delivers a message that remains just as relevant today.
"The message is, listen to what's in your heart and don't sell out," he explained.
It's a fitting sentiment for a story about a man who refused to compromise his vision, ultimately creating one of the most iconic films in cinematic history.
With heartfelt performances, humor, and an inspiring behind-the-scenes journey, I Play Rocky reminds audiences that sometimes the greatest underdog story happens before the cameras even start rolling.
I Play Rocky opens in select theaters November 6, 2026, before expanding nationwide November 20.
