From the last pick in the NFL Draft to an unforgettable underdog story.

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Mr. Irrelevant, starring David Corenswet as John Tuggle, the real-life football player who went from being the final selection of the 1983 NFL Draft to proving he belonged on the field.

Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies) and written by Nick Santora, the film follows Tuggle after he is selected by the New York Giants with the 335th and final pick of the draft — earning him the annual title of “Mr. Irrelevant.”

But Tuggle refuses to let his draft position define him.

The trailer offers a first look at Corenswet as the determined young running back fighting for his place on the Giants roster under then first-year head coach Bill Parcells, played by Michael Shannon. What begins as a classic sports underdog story soon becomes something far more personal, as Tuggle faces challenges that extend well beyond the football field.

Tuggle ultimately made the Giants roster and was named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year during his rookie season. His promising career, however, was cut short after he was diagnosed with cancer in 1984. He died two years later at just 25 years old, leaving behind a legacy that extended far beyond his brief time in the NFL.

Alongside Corenswet and Shannon, Mr. Irrelevant stars Isabel May, David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright.

Produced by Skydance Sports, Megamix and Blackjack Films, the inspirational drama brings Tuggle’s remarkable story of perseverance, hope and resilience to the big screen more than four decades after he first defied expectations.

Mr. Irrelevant arrives exclusively in theaters December 25, 2026.
